SEPTEMBER 11, 2001...

Today's sky watch photograph comes from Bristol Motor Speedway. For the August race the American flag was delivered to the speedway by the U.S. military. When I took the photo I didn't really know if I would ever use it for anything but after realizing that September 11 and sky watch fell on the same day I had the perfect place for this image.

I am an extremely patriotic person that loves my country and its flag. On this anniversary of September 11, 2001 also known as Patriot's Day the flag's meaning comes across even stronger. On that day the worst terrorist attack to ever take place on U.S. soil occurred. Many innocent people lost their lives that day and America was changed forever. As a firefighter this day carries even a greater significance. I have had friends give their lives in the line of duty as fireman including my best friend a few years ago. On this day 343 New York City firefighters lost their lives trying protect the citizens they had sworn to keep safe. Like all firefighters when one loses their life in the line of duty it is a hard thing to take and it never gets easier, but when 343 make the supreme sacrifice at one time it is more than one can comprehend.

As the years have past since this incident we have seen the public's feelings toward firefighters go back to taking us for granted as they did before that fateful day. We do not do our job for recognition or rewards, for most of us it is simply for the love of the work we do and the satisfaction of helping others in the time of need. On this day all I ask is that you never forget the people that lost their lives that day, the United States military that continues to protect us and keep us a free country and the emergency services workers that risk their lives daily to keep you safe here in America.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES AND LET US NEVER FORGET.

9/11 was certainly a terrible day and it caused more death and destruction than that day alone. It started a war which will never end. It was terrible that so many colleagues of yours died.

Thanks for your visit.

That kind of performance always sends chills up and down my back and it don't take much to bring tears. I guess I am just an old soldier at heart.

My Sky Watch Friday blog is at my Canon Pixels blog. If you have time I would appreciate your having a look at the sky peeking through the oak tree leaves.

This is a perfect photo for today...and what you said, you said well.

We live in a very small town with just volunteer firemen, actually I think all the little towns in our county run on volunteers, but they are sure there when you need them.

The date is special world over and brings many reflections about such a terrible deed.
Moments like this, so huge, can never be forgotten, nor yet the many people directly and indirectly involved.
Thank you for all you do and for what you represent in your line of work.
Another SWF person, thanks too for your visit.
