The Herd...

When I spoke of our recent trip to Elk County I mentioned the large herd of elk that we knew was in excess of 75, well here is some of that herd. I wanted to get photos of the herd and quickly changed lens to get a few shots. The herd was to large and spread out to get them all in a single photograph. While taking these photos I was not aware of what was happening at the time and didn't notice it until I went to process the photos. If you look closely at the first photo along the tree line to the left you will notice the bull has mounted a cow. I was aware that if a cow was not bread she would continue coming into heat but I was very surprised to see rutting activity in the middle of February. With Shane in school during the rut and not able to make the trip with me I was glad to see him get to experience some of what it is like and hear the sounds. Don't forget to click on the photographs for a larger view.

Speaking of Shane please stop by his blog for a new post today.

Your herd shots are quite impressive, well done!

Much of the snow was gone this past weekend but still some deep stuff in the shaded areas.

Brad,
That one came back as well! I'm trying to think of some way.

Brad, we heard several bugles two weeks ago when we were on the hill. I had to hear it several times before I was convinced I was not hearing things. These animals and their yearly cycle is absolutely amazing!

Again, a real nice Image of all those Elk. Would like to see something like this myself. Just where is it that you go to see these great animals?
