Back To Elk Country...

It is back to Elk country for today. Like the whitetail rut I do not know where I left off nor do I remember many of the particulars as it was five long, I mean really long months ago. This years Elk rut was not a bust but compared to the previous year it seemed like it. The weather was bad, that Elk were not as easy to see, they has less to say and the action was slow. All that aside I was still in the great outdoors with fresh air, wildlife and good people and that is what counts the most.
I do remember photographing this bull as it was my last morning there and I was concentrating on the small herd on the hillside in front of me. This bull, a few cows and calves came through the woods to my right and approached me fairly close. They got close enough that I could not use the camera mounted to the tripod and had to photograph this bull with the Nikon D90 70-200 f2.8 hand held. I didn't realize that this was a decent shot until I opened it in raw yesterday and made a few small changes. Speaking of raw I have finally upgraded to CS5 but have not had much chance to play with it. I am thinking that after just getting the new bike (by the way did you see it on the previous post, IT'S AWESOME!) I won't push my luck with Linda about getting Lightroom3.

This IS a GREAT photo Brad! Before reading, I thought that it had really really good depth, bringing me into the photo. The background colors just make it pop, and the tack sharp details make this all around awesomeness! Well done!

I agree with Hannibal about the photo, she pretty well says it all.

Also thanks for your comment about the deer. I want to eventually get to the place that I make the point that I think they are over-reacting to things. I am not on the same page as many in the PGC although I can see the point to some of their arguments

As you noted, you are seeing more deer close to houses, etc. and I think that is where they are having the most problem with them, especially in the urban areas around Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. It seems though that there is a substantial faction out there that really wants the herd reduced. One lady actually said something to the effect that a day in which you saw two deer in the woods should be a day to remember and be excited about. I shudder to think if the management of SNP and other places like it get this outlook on the deer and take them down to that level.

Excellent shot Brad, goes to prove buckwheats point, get close and use a short lens for the best images.

I hope you get time to enjoy you new ride; it looks sweet! I bet you will have the photog gear in the saddlebags but where will you put the pod? I'm sure you'll find a way,

What a 'killer' shot Brad! I know you are proud of that one and so would I. I've been away from blogging for a while due to some unexpected medical issues, but I would like to ease my back as much as I can.
I've been under the weather the last few months and not able to get out much with the camera, but I did manage to photograph the last launch of space shuttle Endeavour this week. Check out my blog and my website for some photos if you feel so inclined.
